Paeonia mascula Mill. (P. coralina Retz.)

 

A fairy peony, Rose peony - threatened with extinction . The plant has leaves with wide oval parts covered with grey wax coating. Blossoms are simple crimson or rose in color. It grows in South and South-eastern Europe, the Balkan Peninsula, the Crimea Peninsula, the Caucasus and South - West Asia. In Bulgaria it is widely spread in pre-Balkan, Sofia field areas and the Rhodopes Mountainns.

It also grows in wood-cutting areasanb thickets, in shady places in good, fresh and temperate wet soil, in forests where grow oaks, durmast, beech and hornbeam, in oak and beech belts 500-1500 m above the sea level. It grows in groups or singly.
